Fertility Signs

Fertility signs are physical changes that happen around ovulation.

These signs help indicate when the body is most likely to conceive.

They are caused by rising estrogen levels before ovulation and progesterone changes after ovulation.

1. Changes in Cervical Mucus

One of the most noticeable fertility signs is a change in cervical mucus.

As ovulation approaches:

  • Mucus becomes clear and slippery.
  • It may stretch between fingers (similar to raw egg whites).
  • It feels wet or lubricated.

This type of mucus helps sperm move easily through the reproductive tract.

After ovulation, mucus often becomes thicker or dry again.

2. Basal Body Temperature (BBT)

Basal body temperature is your body’s resting temperature.

  • It slightly increases (about 0.3–0.5°C or 0.5–1°F) after ovulation.
  • This rise happens because of progesterone.
  • The temperature stays elevated until the next period.

BBT confirms that ovulation has already happened, but it does not predict it in advance.

3. Ovulation Pain (Mittelschmerz)

Some people experience mild pain on one side of the lower abdomen.

  • It may feel like a dull ache or a sharp twinge.
  • It usually lasts a few minutes to a few hours.
  • It occurs around the time the egg is released.

Not everyone feels ovulation pain.

4. Increased Libido

Many people notice an increase in sexual desire near ovulation.

This is linked to rising estrogen and the body’s natural fertility timing.

It is a normal biological response.

5. Breast Tenderness

Hormonal shifts may cause mild breast tenderness.

This can occur around ovulation or after ovulation when progesterone rises.

6. Cervical Position Changes

The cervix also changes during the fertile window.

Around ovulation:

  • The cervix becomes softer.
  • It moves slightly higher.
  • It may feel more open.

After ovulation, it returns to a firmer and lower position.

7. Positive Ovulation Test

Ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge.

  • A positive result suggests ovulation may occur within 24–36 hours.
  • This helps identify the fertile window.

These tests are useful for people trying to conceive.

Summary

Common fertility signs include:

  • Clear, stretchy cervical mucus
  • Slight rise in basal body temperature
  • Mild ovulation pain
  • Increased libido
  • Changes in cervical position
  • Positive LH test

Not everyone experiences all these signs.

Learning to recognize fertility signs can help with family planning and understanding your menstrual cycle.
